Dr. Sam Ho is Director of the Histocompatibility and Infectious Disease Testing Laboratory at Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network in Itasca, IL, one of the 57 organ procurement organizations (OPO) in the U.S. Dr. Ho also serves as the consulting Laboratory Director for Gift of Life Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, Mid-America Transplant in St Louis, MO and Center for Organ Recovery and Education in Pittsburgh, PA. Collectively, these four OPOs facilitate organ donation from more than 1300 deceased donors per year and their donation service areas span across eight states (Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia) with over 32 million population and 29 transplant centers. Dr. Ho’s laboratories perform a wide range of clinical testing in the areas of histocompatibility, immunology, virology, bacteriology, histology, chemistry, and point-of-care to support various donation and transplantation activities.
Dr. Ho has been an active member of ASHI for over a decade. He currently serves as co-chair and inspector on the ASHI Accreditation Review Board (ARB), co-chair on the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI) Director Examination Committee and member on the ASHI National Clinical Affairs Committee. Previously he has served as commissioner on the ARB, chair of the Membership Committee, as well as member on the Directors Training Review & Credentialing Committee, International Affairs Committee, Annual Meeting Program Planning Committee and Abstract Committee.
Dr. Ho holds an adjunct faculty appointment as Associate Professor of Medicine at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, MI. Dr. Ho earned his undergraduate and PhD degrees from Baylor University in Waco, TX, and subsequently completed his post-doctoral fellowship training in transplant immunology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI.
Aside from his expertise in clinical histocompatibility and immunogenetics, Dr. Ho is an internationally recognized expert in swine tissue typing. His research focuses on applying immunogenetics testing to facilitate the use of swine as large animal models for allo- and xeno-transplantation research, as xenograft donors for human transplantation, as well as to investigate the influence of MHC diversity on swine disease resistance and susceptibility. Since 2010, he has been serving as chair of the International Union of Immunological Societies Swine Leukocyte Antigen (SLA) Nomenclature Committee and curator for the SLA section of the Immuno Polymorphism Database (IPD).
